About Tao Ya-Lun (陶亞倫)

The artist has been focusing on human existence and condition in the era of information technology. His works encompass a riotous profusion of forms from video and sound artworks to kinetic installations and manipulation of lights and shadows. As the extension of human consciousness and body, technology maximizes human abilities in cogitation and physical reaction. His works brim with dialectical logic and philosophical reflection that are intended to provoke the viewers’ profound thoughts. Although optical fibers and media technology have shortened the geographical distance among people, they have deprived us of not only our consciousness and experiences of the real world but also our awareness of the physical body. The being of art and humanity hinges completely on the visual illusions of perspective, which results in the disconnection of mind and body. Utilizing the versatility of natural lights and shadows, the artist encourages the viewers to explore the margin of self-consciousness and the utmost of philosophical reflection through the interaction with his works. He expects the viewers to experience the very moment when their consciousness is awakened by the flickering, ambiguous images.
