Double Square Gallery is pleased to present Huang Hai-Hsin’s solo exhibition – Springtime Hills, which runs from December 18, 2021 to January 29, 2022. Huang is known for transforming quotidian scenes with her individualistic approach informed by a black sense of humor to record everyday life from different perspectives and portraying the varied aspects of humanity in contemporary society. After her first solo exhibition at Double Square Gallery in 2020, Huang was subsequently invited to exhibit in the 12th Taipei Biennial, and has also been featured in the Taipei Biennial exhibition at the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France afterwards. Springtime Hills at the gallery will showcase more than thirty paintings. With Taiwan’s mountains and woods that she has seen in the past couple of years as her backdrop, Huang records a wide spectrum of absurd yet realistic scenes observed in her excursions. These paintings show a vivid contrast between natural landscape and modern people’s obsessively checking in and posting on social media in this era of new media. These everyday scenes surrounding us have all become the artist’s source of creative inspiration.

The exhibition title, Springtime Hills, is inspired by a Taiwanese folk song of the same title. The song is about a group of friends having an excursion and relaxing in the springtime scenery, which perfectly describes the artist’s state of mind when she toured in Taiwan in the past couple of years. Since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020, people’s mobility has been restrained. Having lived in New York for years and created art around the world, Huang took the opportunity to travel around Taiwan and experience the local lifestyle. The paintings featured in this exhibition demonstrate a rich, vibrant and saturated palette informed by Huang’s deep affection for her native land. In a way, each painting is an embodiment of the purest goodness of Taiwan. In the meantime, this body of works, like Huang’s other works, is infused with her distinctive sense of humor. Huang interprets the trendy outdoor activities of mountaineering and camping that have become popular topics of hashtags and check-ins on social media. Although human beings seem to have enter the embrace of Mother Nature, their eyes are still locked on electronic device screens. In this era when people are virtually kidnapped by technology, their unease, loneliness and fragility have all become absurd yet authentic realities portrayed by the artist.

Huang Hai-Hsin (b. 1984) was born in Taipei. She received her BFA from the National Taipei University of Education in 2007, and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York in 2009. She was awarded Honorable Mention in the Taipei Arts Awards of 2011. In recent years, she has presented solo exhibitions at the Art Basel Hong Kong, the Museum der bildenden Künste, Leipzig, Germany and the ISE Culture Foundation, New York. Her works have been exhibited in Taipei, Kaohsiung, Tokyo, Seoul, Leipzig, Paris, New York, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Israel and Kyoto, and have been showcased in the 12th Taipei Biennial in 2020 – You and I Don’t Live on the Same Planet, respectively presented at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and the Centre Pompidou-Metz, France. Her works are included in the collections of various prestigious art institutions, among which are the White Rabbit Gallery in Australia; the Museum der bildenden Künste, Leipzig in Germany; the Taipei Fine Arts Museum; the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts; the UBS Art Collection; and the Yageo Foundation.
