One Incision, Two Realms

Chih Yi-Long, Li Ping-Yi, Chou Yo-Chen, and Hung Yu-Chiau

Following the in-depth exploration of printmaking’s material boundaries in the group exhibition Emergent Strata, Double Square Gallery is pleased to present the group exhibition One Incision, Two Realms from May 9 to June 20, 2026, offering another dimension of reflection. This exhibition brings together four artists—Chih Yi-Long, Li Ping-Yi, Chou Yo-Chen, and Hung Yu-Chiau—to re-examine the "multiplicity" inherent in printmaking. Shifting the focus from technique to concept, the exhibition explores the twin-born relationship between the "matrix" and the "print," and how artists transform intangible thoughts into visible entities through their creative processes.
The title One Incision, Two Realms symbolizes the dialectic and decisiveness within the artistic process: every stroke carved and every layer printed is a manifestation of an intangible idea. In the context of contemporary art, the value of printmaking has shifted from simple quantitative expansion to a profound exploration of action, the body, and intellectual density. Through carving, layering, and pressing, the artists transform intangible concepts into works endowed with material weight.
Li Ping-Yi specializes in woodcut prints. Her original“mirrored landscape” series juxtaposes the woodblock—traditionally hidden behind the scenes—with the paper print, revealing a dialogue between "subtraction" and "addition" through a delicate style and a warm, nuanced palette. Chou Yo-Chen’s work originates from an exploration of "infinity." She has long used "whale fall" as a primary theme, viewing it as a metaphor for transformation, gifting, and temporality. Utilizing plaster relief printing, she repeatedly presses large-scale paper consistent with the matrix's size to ensure the complete transfer of the image. Hung Yu-Chiau favors the unique texture and uncontrollability of woodblock water-color printing, drawing inspiration from organic forms in nature such as streams and raindrops. After the printing process, she incorporates sewing into her "trace" works, reassembling the scars and fragments left by perceptual experience into new memories. Chih Yi-Long further transforms printmaking into a conceptual medium. With the "Invisible Matrix" as his core proposition, he explores the possibility of printing an existence that is "invisible yet perceptible," thereby developing a creative form that combines spatial awareness with installation characteristics.
These four artists transform the "matrix" of printmaking from a traditional drafting tool into an embodiment of artistic speculation. One Incision, Two Realms is not only a departure from traditional drafting mindsets but also a redefinition of the material forms and collecting logic of printmaking. When the "matrix" and "printing" are no longer just techniques but extensions of concepts, the artists challenge the subordinate relationship between the original plate and the final image, forcing the viewer to re-examine the intellectual density and the weight of choice inherent in every work.
From the focus on temporality and physicality in Emergent Strata to the conceptual exploration in One Incision, Two Realms, Double Square Gallery continues to advance the understanding of printmaking's contemporaneity. This exhibition cordially invites the audience to participate in this dialogue regarding the essence of art and contemporary concepts, witnessing how a new generation of creators breathes new life into the art of printmaking through precise decisiveness.
