Instance Dungeons: Gray Zone, curated by Chen Hsiang-Wen and Lin Hsiao-Yu, is on view at the Asia Culture Center (ACC) in Gwangju, South Korea, from September 5 to November 15, 2026. Built upon the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts’ exhibition Instance Dungeons and Sights, the project delves deep into Taiwan’s tangled historico-political context and its geostrategic significance within the First Island Chain amid the global turmoil of the New Cold War structure. The exhibition metaphorizes the concept of the “instance dungeon” as an arena where histories and conflicts endlessly recur and intertwine within global power dynamics. By deconstructing and reconstituting archives, the exhibited works confront Taiwan’s political narratives and collective memories, unleashing the historical specters suppressed by polarized ideologies and the Cold War system. Facing covert information operations and cognitive warfare in today’s gray zone, the participating artists dissect how daily life is subtly manipulated by political technologies and surveillance mechanisms, examining individual agency within these geopolitical instances and recalibrating Taiwan’s critical coordinates toward the world and the future through the reflexivity of art.

Participating artist SU (Su Hui-Yu) obtained an MFA from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2003 and has since remained active in contemporary art and film, with his "Re-shooting" series focusing on Taiwanese and East Asian history, memory, re-imagination, and transgression. His recent projects engage collective memories and ideologies while exploring mechanisms of oppression and liberation tied to Taiwanese cultural values. SU’s works have been exhibited at renowned festivals, exhibitions, and art institutions worldwide, including MOCA Taipei, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Casino Luxembourg, Bangkok Arts and Culture Center, Kunsthalle Winterthur, Up Vargas Museum, Curitiba International Biennial of Contemporary Art, 1646 Art Space, Art Hub Copenhagen, Power Station of Art, Berlinale, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, Singapore International Film Festival, Videonale, PERFORMA, and RISING. His Space Warriors series has toured the Hyundai ArtLab for the 5th VH Art Award, ARS Electronica, Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz, and Casino Luxembourg. His museum solo exhibition The Trio Hall, curated by Eugenio Viola, was presented at MOCA Taipei in May 2023, premiered as a feature film in the Forum section of the Berlinale in January 2025, and toured to MAMBO in Bogotá in October 2025 as his first museum solo in Latin America.
