Yokomizo Miyuki

Double Square Gallery is pleased to announce "Landscape — Tracing the Invisible Route," a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Yokomizo Miyuki, running from July 4 to August 8, 2026. This exhibition marks the second collaboration between the artist and Double Square Gallery, featuring over ten paintings and installations. Through her signature use of lines, Yokomizo invites viewers to explore the boundary between the tangible and the intangible, tracing the subtle paths woven through memory and time.
Yokomizo’s background in sculpture from Tama Art University deeply informs her approach to painting; she views the canvas as a three-dimensional space, breaking the limits of flat surfaces. For the paintings in this exhibition, the artist uses fine strings soaked in oil paint, stretching and plucking them to snap the pigment onto the canvas. The countless crossing lines create a cloth-like texture, letting viewers feel the heavy build-up of energy. Beyond paintings, Yokomizo uses carbon fiber tubes and silver leaf to create installations, extending these lines into the gallery space to challenge the boundaries of the canvas.
The exhibition title reflects the artist’s core ideas. For her, a "landscape" is not just a view, but a mix of different perspectives and a continuous process of thought. In her artist statement, she describes how her frequent travels always bring excitement for unknown lands. She tries to trace past routes through her work, uncovering faint pieces of memory and time. It is these hidden, hard-to-catch moments that truly drive her creative practice.
