Double Square Gallery is proud to announce its participation in Asia Now Paris, a premier international contemporary art fair, from October 20 to October 24, 2026. Bringing together three pivotal voices in Taiwanese contemporary art—Su Hui-Yu, Chen Ching-Yao, and Huang Hai-Hsin—the gallery explores how these artists employ heterogeneous idioms through historical speculation, acute everyday observations, and localized aesthetic practices, dismantling established power structures and posing profound, critical inquiries into contemporary ideologies.
At this convergence, each of the three artists initiates a dialogue with mainstream norms through their signature methodologies. Su Hui-Yu’s video masterpiece, The White Waters, plunges classical theatrical texts into the crucible of image reconstruction, confronting deep-seated motifs such as floods, death, and violence. Through variants of visual grammar, he carves out novel dimensions for examining subject desire and identity politics. By reframing martial law memories and bodily politics through a distinct queer perspective, he offers a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional power dynamics and female desire—serving as a profound tribute to liberation movements and demonstrating the critical resilience of contemporary Asian art in intervening within social discourse.
Chen Ching-Yao employs the traditional Japanese painting technique of mineral and gofun pigments alongside contemporary perspectives, performing a visual politics of humor and absurdity through the bold appropriation of popular culture symbols and political portraits. Marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, he parodies Tsuguharu Foujita’s original war paintings, replacing frontline carnage with a nonchalant squad of schoolgirls wielding AK-47s while retaining the grand scale and intense dramatic tension of the compositions. Through this historical reinterpretation, Chen elevates seemingly casual appropriations and mischief into a micro-politics of resistance against power representations, compelling viewers to confront the absurd essence of existing power structures.
Meanwhile, Huang Hai-Hsin turns her gaze toward the microscopic crevices of everyday life, capturing moments of awkwardness and neurotic tension to outline the collective anxieties of ordinary existence. Her works operate through a sense of helpless, dark comedic irony—acting simultaneously as a satire of reality and an enactment of festive, collective escapism. Interweaving a childlike, innocent perspective with harsh realities, she endows viewers with a fresh insight into the world.
Through diverse mediums including video, photography, and painting, these works manifest how the artists fuse collective memory and personal experience into tension-filled visual narratives. Amidst the interplay of humor and wit, viewers are guided back to a critical scrutiny of reality, finding resonance and illumination within the human condition while gazing upon contemporary social landscapes.
