"I intend to use painting to make landscapes that never truly left us visible and sensible through a unique texture—leaving thin, hazy traces within the world." — Liew En Lin

Double Square Gallery is honored to announce that from May 9 to June 20, 2026, it will present "Over the Hills and Far Away," a solo exhibition by emerging Taiwanese artist Liew En Lin. This marks the second collaboration between Double Square Gallery and Liew En Lin, following the 2025 "MIT Young Artist Discovery" section co-organized by the Ministry of Culture and Art Taipei. This solo exhibition also features the collaborative expertise of curator Shen Po-Cheng. Artist Liew En Lin’s creative practice involves extracting materials from daily life and integrating them into an imaginative world where reality and fiction intertwine. His inspiration stems from the "sprue"—the small mark left behind when a part is clipped from a model kit frame. He transforms these tiny severance traces into distinct brushstrokes that define the boundaries of his landscapes. For him, painting is a means of evoking a shared collective experience through these scenes that merge the everyday with the imaginary.

"Over the Hills and Far Away" continues his observation of landscapes, choosing a presentation style that is more accessible to the public. Breaking away from traditional, heavy large frames, the new works in this exhibition pivot toward light and flexible small-scale formats. These paintings are like small illustrations in the corners of newspapers and magazines, or a lingering memory captured in a phone or desktop wallpaper. Like hand-torn notes, these works can be tucked into envelopes or taped to a corner, becoming the quietest companions in daily life. For the artist, although some beautiful sceneries remain unreachable, it is precisely because of this sense of distance that they can consistently and warmly follow us through our lives.

Liew En Lin's landscape creations are not sketches of specific locations, but rather transformations of sensory fragments extracted from memory. These works document his process of preserving landscapes, allowing originally blurred visual impressions to become concrete and clear through color and brushstrokes. In terms of technique, he favors the slow drying process of oil painting. Compared to fast-drying acrylics or watercolors, oil paint provides more time for him to adjust the composition and maintain a dialogue with the work. He uses turpentine to dilute the pigments, giving the surface a thin and translucent texture that allows viewers to see the underlying pencil lines and the grain of the canvas itself. This exhibition cordially invites the audience to step into Double Square Gallery and observe how Liew En Lin, through his unique oil textures and emotional brushwork, depicts the landscapes in our lives that feel like "déjà vu."

Liew En Lin, born in 1998, graduated with a Master’s degree from the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at Tainan National University of the Arts, possessing a deep background in contemporary art theory and practice.
